June Apex Discussion Series - Insurance Market Risk

Our June Apex Discussion Series will focus on the new Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) requirements being imposed on property/casualty insurance carriers in the state of New York are a harbinger of things to come. Financial examinations being conducted in the future will include an evaluation of company’s ERM and/or ORSA (Own Solvency Risk Assessment) models as regulators view ERM as a key part of any risk-focused examination process.

Insurers should address all reasonably, foreseeable and relevant material risks, including market risk. Underwriting cycles, pricing variations by line by state and entries/exits from the market have not been definitively studied nor documented. Pinnacle’s presentation will provide a framework for such an analysis of market risk concentrating on three particular segments:

• Illinois Private Passenger Auto
• Florida Homeowners
• California Workers Compensation

Joseph A. Herbers, ACAS, MAAA Joe Herbers is Pinnacle’s Managing Principal and has over 26 years of consulting experience. His practice is concentrated in providing loss reserving and funding studies for a wide variety of entities – both traditional insurance companies and alternative market entities. Mr. Herbers’ areas of focus include policyholder owned group captives, large deductible and/or self-insured entities, lawyers’ professional liability carriers, Florida property writers and nonstandard auto writers in the state of Illinois.

Darcie R. Cox, Senior Actuarial Analyst Darcie is a Senior Actuarial Analyst with Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, Inc., in the Bloomington, Illinois, office. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics from Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois and a Master’s Degree in statistics from Western Illinois University in Macomb. She has been with Pinnacle over 6 years and is in the process of taking examinations to attain professional credentials through the Casualty Actuarial Society.
