There was a degree of uncertainty among the participants due to Karen Weldin Steward, Insurance Commissioner for the past 8 years, being recently defeated by Trinidad Navarro in the Democratic primary election. Republican candidate Jeff Cragg is also running, and both candidates attended the conference.
Memorable Moments at the 2016 SCCIA Executive Educational Conference
The 17th Annual Executive Educational Conference of the South Carolina Captive Insurance Association (SCCIA) was held September 13-15 at the historic Mills House and Hibernian Hall in downtown Charleston. There were over 200 attendees, including leading captive service providers,  owners and regulators from several states. Tropical Storm Julia dropped several inches of rain on Charleston on Wednesday, flooding several streets, but the conference was unaffected.

In the late 1990s, staff at Colorado Open Lands, a nonprofit land trust that exists to protect Colorado’s treasured land and water resources, started wondering how it would handleenforcement actions on its easements. The answer ultimately led to the creation of a unique insurance company that helps land trusts protect the public benefit of conserved lands forever and covers land trusts’ public liability for lasting conservation.
