Educational Opportunities Await at the 2016 CAS RPM Seminar

With the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Ratemaking and Product Management (RPM) Seminar around the corner, I would like to take a moment to highlight a couple of the conference’s educational sessions.

The CAS continues its tradition of supporting the growth and expansion of members’ skill sets through a series of workshops, and Pinnacle is proud to be part of this educational process. For the third consecutive year, we will be part of the team leading the R workshop on Monday, March 14th.

I have found R to be particularly useful when scouring the analytics realm for cutting-edge work. Many of the data scientists across diverse industries, be they of academic or business bent, work in R. Familiarity with this particular language and the open-source packages it offers enables actuaries to enhance their analytics toolkits and adapt advances in research to tangible, relevant insurance industry issues.

I am proud to be co-leading a session with Jun Yan, of Deloitte, to outline the nuances and considerations in solving problems using ranking versus point-estimating models. As practitioners, it is very easy to fall prey to utilizing techniques simply because they are familiar to us, without investigating the consequences of the assumptions such techniques incorporate. Together, Jun and I hope to bring some of these investigative techniques to light in order to help attendees widen their lenses and better tweak their approaches in applying analytics to future problems. I will also moderate the session on machine learning techniques. Survey sessions have become a regular and essential part of the CAS RPM offerings. In my personal experience, active participation in these sessions and subsequent follow-up opportunities lead to enlightening and fruitful new research directions.

These are just a few of the interesting educational sessions available to attendees at this year’s RPM Seminar. As always, I welcome the opportunity to discuss these and any other analytics and insurance topics with you. Please feel free to track me down at RPM for a chat!
