This year’s National Risk Retention Association (NRRA) National Conference in Chicago offered several sessions focused on disruptive innovation’s impact on the rapidly changing face of risk. The keynote presentation, The Reality Trap, was a thought-provoking exploration of how expanding one’s perspective can equip people to better embrace change. The presenter challenged audience members’ preconceived notions about generational differences and suggested that we simply cannot learn new skills quickly enough to keep up with the ever-accelerating pace of change.

Disruptive Medical Technology is Changing Lives (Including Mine)

We live in truly amazing times. Technological advances seem to be changing every aspect of our lives. During the past several years, we have witnessed numerous technological developments that were once limited  to science fiction: 3-D-printed ears with built-in hearing aids, plastic exoskeletons for people suffering from paralysis, inexpensive prosthetic arms, and nanotechnology to treat various types of cancer, just to name a few. Within the next couple of years, I hope to personally participate in one of these amazing breakthroughs: a treatment for one of the most common forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth, or CMT.

Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary National Indemnity Company has announced that it has agreed to buy Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company (MLMIC). Terms of the deal were not made public. Warren Buffett’s admiration of MLMIC was clear as he called it, “a gem of a company that has protected New York’s physicians, mid-level providers, hospitals and dentists like no other for over 40 years.”
